CINCINNATI (WKRC) – GE Aerospace is offering a rare look inside its 747 flying laboratory, a specialized aircraft used to test jet engines in real-world flight conditions.
The flying laboratory is designed to let engineers see how engines perform during flights as they work on engine tests. GE’s design employees are mostly based in Cincinnati, but this was one of the few times they have been able to fly on the aircraft.
GE said the tests are meant to keep engines reliable and adaptable as conditions change.
“We are not nice to these engines at all. We put them through the harshest conditions we can. High angle of attack. Icing programs we force them into stall conditions,” said Nathan Kamps, principal flight test engineer…
