(WJW) – The Ohio Department of Natural Resources recently shared a picture of a large buck, but what stood out wasn’t the animals size — but its lack of antlers.

The pictured posted to social media was reportedly captured in Hamilton County. The photo is time-stamped April 1, but it’s no joke. According to ODNR, most Ohio bucks lose their antlers beginning in January, which is after the breeding season and when hormone levels decrease.

The process of re-growing the antlers then begins in the spring with most bucks having noticeable velvet-covered nubs by May, reports wildlife experts.
