With 2nd-ranked Frederick Douglass visiting the Stadium of Champions on Friday night, the Christian County Tigers knew they’d have to limit mistakes and cash in on opportunities to pull off the upset over the undefeated Broncos. However, despite the Tigers improving on last week’s performance in a loss to South Warren, empty trips to the red zone in the first and third quarters proved too much to overcome in a 35-7 defeat.
Riding the swell of a four-game win streak while holding each of their last two opponents scoreless, the Broncos got on the scoreboard first on a short TD run by Dakari Talbert just three minutes into the game. But after Christian County’s Tavares Burgess took a screen pass from Jasiah McCarley 37 yards, followed by a pass interference call on Frederick Douglass, the Tigers were in business just outside the red zone.
Deasian Harris converted a 4th-and-1 with a run to the 4-yard line, but on 1st-and-goal the Tigers fumbled in the end zone, and the Broncos recovered to maintain their touchdown advantage.
Frederick Douglass turned a long drive into points on a two-yard scoring plunge by Talbert with 4:27 left in the second quarter, and was back in the end zone in the final seconds of the first half on an 11-yard TD reception by Kaden John to lead 21-0 at the break.
Christian County forced a three and out to start the second half and drove the ball down to the Frederick Douglass 10-yard line on the ensuing possession. The Tigers opted to shoot for the end zone on 4th down, but McCarley’s pass was picked off at the goal line by the Bronco’s Thurman Wade to preserve the shutout…
