New Year brings a winter chill to Hopkinsville area

Christmas was mostly jacket weather in Western Kentucky but the New Year is bringing a winter chill to the region.

The overnight low temperature at the conclusion of New Year’s Day will be around 26 degrees, followed by cold temperatures for the remainder of the week, according to the National Weather Service forecast.

Daytime highs Thursday through Sunday will be in the low 40s to mid-30s, while overnight temperatures will dip into the 20s.

There’s a slight chance of snow Saturday evening. Then a wintery mix of rain, freezing rain and sleet is likely Sunday morning.

Now is a good time to prepare for winter driving conditions and the possibility of being temporarily stuck in cold conditions. Kentucky State Police recommends the following items for a car kit:

  • Cell phone charger
  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • Blankets
  • Gloves
  • Water and snacks
  • Jumper cables
  • Collapsable shovel
  • Windshield scraper
  • Sand or kitty litter for tire traction
