According to the preliminary report from the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Friday, April 25, about 12:30 pm, a 2020 Ford Edge, driven by 79 year old, Wesley Robson, drove off the ferry into the river. The report stated, “Vehicle #1 was traveling North on Cumberland City Road, entered the Cumberland City Ferry, and struck the gate at the rear of the ferry. Vehicle # 1 entered the Cumberland River and became immersed in water.”
The Stewart County Sheriff’s Office told the Standard, the car drove onto the ferry on the Cumberland City side, as the ferry boat was turning around to head across the river. The vehicle hit the gate going into the water. The vehicle floated for a while, long enough for a small jon boat, called a skiff, to be launched from a barge. They were able to reach the vehicle, by this time the nose was in the water. The driver appeared stunned and the windows had been rolled up on the vehicle. They said workers said they believed the widows were down when the vehicle entered the ferry. The vehicle floated towards the Steam Plant and started sinking about 200 yards from the ferry…
