Fort Campbell soldier charged with homicide in wreck that killed fellow 19-year-old soldier

CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – A Fort Campbell soldier, wanted in Kentucky for traffic violations and evading police, has been indicted on a charge of vehicular homicide for his role in a vehicle-vs-motorcycle wreck in October 2023 that killed a fellow 19-year-old soldier on Fort Campbell Boulevard.

Spc. Braxton Connor May, a 20-year-old soldier with the 101st Airborne Division, was indicted on one count of vehicular homicide by the April term of the Montgomery County Grand Jury.

Upon his arrest on June 17, May was additionally charged with one count of fugitive from justice. According to a copy of the arrest warrant, May was also wanted in Nelson County, Kentucky, on two counts of wanton endangerment, evading police and reckless driving.

On Oct. 21, 2023, at approximately 1:45 p.m., May crashed into 19-year-old motorcyclist Pfc. William Smallwood, a soldier also stationed at Fort Campbell. According to the indictment, the crash occurred as the “proximate result of conduct constituting drag racing.”

Smallwood was immediately taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville but died shortly after arriving as a result of his injuries…
