Drug dealers see harsher penalties for deadly overdoses in Cheatham County, including historic second-degree murder conviction

CHEATHAM COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) — Cheatham County authorities confirmed overdose deaths are down from 14 last year to only four this year. In addition, drug dealers are now seeing harsher sentences in court.

Back in the October 2020, a man in his mid-20s died of an overdose. Cheatham County law enforcement worked the case aggressively for years, eventually leading to the arrest of a suspect, Curtis Daye, in March 2023.

Two years later, on July 24, Daye was found guilty of second-degree murder for that overdose death. According to Lt. Shannon Heflin with the Cheatham County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Unit, that was the first time in county history a dealer was convicted of second-degree murder for supplying drugs that resulted in a fatality…
