Oral testing device could help Clarksville Police Department detect drugged drivers within minutes

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A new testing device to catch impaired drivers could soon come to the Clarksville Police Department.

People driving under the influence continues to be one of Tennessee’s biggest challenges. According to a dashboard from the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security and the Tennessee Highway Patrol, half of all crashes caused by driving under the influence resulted in either injury or death from Sept. 2024 through August.

“Nobody wants their family to be injured or killed by impaired or drunk drivers,” Tony Burnett, State Coordinator for the Tennessee Highway Safety Office’s Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement and Drug Recognition Expert Program, told News 2.
