Cumberland City Passes Ordinance Requiring Boring Of City Streets

The Cumberland City Board of Mayor and Aldermen met December 4 with all members present. The meeting started with a public hearing on an ordinance to require boring instead of open cutting of streets for underground utility installation, repair or connection, unless boring is determined by the city to be infeasible. No members of the public spoke, the public hearing ended and all members voted on second reading to pass the ordinance.

Next, City Recorder Kristane Mathis said she and Mayor Phil Taylor met with Municipal Technical Advisory Service (MTAS) about the city municipal codes, charter and zoning. She said the last two updates were in 2002 and 2008. She gave all the members copies to see if there was anything they think needs updating. She also said they could meet in the Spring with MTAS to go through everything. Mathis also said she would print out all the new ordinances changed/passed and give them to the aldermen.

The discussion turned to repairing streets for construction of new homes. Alex Short said a builder cut out the road on Conger Street and then dumped gravel there. He wondered about sending them a letter from the city about repairing the road. Mayor Phil Taylor said the city ordinance says the builder will pay to have the street repaired but the city would repair it and they will work on the letter…
