Another attempt to breathe fresh life into Springfield’s historic Woolen Mills property is now underway, after it was recently acquired by new ownership.
The former home of a factory that manufactured wool blankets over a century ago, the site has been purchased by MDI Construction, a nationwide commercial and residential construction company based in Springfield, from previous owners Southern States Construction.
In 2022, Southern States announced plans to renovate the property, including a potential upscale restaurant with commercial and retail space. However, this project never came to fruition causing the company to eventually sell the place.
“We purchased it from (Southern States) kind of in correlation with their bank,” MDI Owner Michael Crawley said. “It was somewhat distressed through their situation. They had plans on doing venues or boutiques and things like that. They had built out their office first and for whatever reason was not able to acquire additional funding to finish out the project.”…
