Mr., Mrs. and more: Tennessee bill would make it optional for students to use teachers’ preferred honorifics

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A new bill would make it optional for students and other teachers to use an educator’s preferred “honorific” in school, an extension of a law passed last year that did the same for preferred names and pronouns.

The bill’s House sponsor, Rep. Aron Maberry (R-Clarksville), said the bill was inspired by a teacher in his district in Clarksville who is transgender. He told lawmakers he believes the educational system should teach “objective truths,” and biological sex falls within that category.
