PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. (CBS12) — If you think the Move Over Law only applies to cars on the highway, think again. Florida has a water version that every boater needs to know.
Under Florida Statute 327.463, boaters must slow down to a minimum wake whenever they’re within 300 feet of emergency vessels with their lights flashing. This includes law enforcement, Coast Guard, and fire-rescue boats, as well as construction vessels flying an orange flag while working.
So why is this important? The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office said that a speeding boat can create huge wakes that can knock first responders off their feet and interfere with critical rescue operations.
