Florida Sheriff warns boaters: ‘Move over’ law applies on the water too

PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. (CBS12) — If you think the Move Over Law only applies to cars on the highway, think again. Florida has a water version that every boater needs to know.

Under Florida Statute 327.463, boaters must slow down to a minimum wake whenever they’re within 300 feet of emergency vessels with their lights flashing. This includes law enforcement, Coast Guard, and fire-rescue boats, as well as construction vessels flying an orange flag while working.

So why is this important? The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office said that a speeding boat can create huge wakes that can knock first responders off their feet and interfere with critical rescue operations. When emergency crews are busy saving lives, the last thing they need is a reckless wake rocking their boat…
