Tiny fighter with huge heart making steady strides in her recovery

In New Port Richey, Florida, at the Rugaz Rescue, a two-year-old French bulldog named Christine had been dumped in a cardboard box at the local shelter on June 17. On the outside of the box was the word “STRAY” printed in ink. There was no further information nor was their any food or water.

Later that day, volunteers from Rugaz Rescue stepped up to help and brought the severely malnourished and injured dog to their partner veterinarian hospital where it was confirmed her festering sores hinted at having been consistently confined to a cage. A thin layer of skin, barely with any fur left, draped her skeleton; she had been starved, and there was no way to figure out how long it had been since she had last eaten.

When she arrived at the rescue, Christine weighed only 11 pounds – less than half of what a dog of her breed should weigh. She had seemingly given up on life, and wherever she had come from, her former owners had little regard for her life or her care.

Her painful burns from lying in her own urine for extended amounts of time, and a Grade-3 heart murmur left her prognosis questionable, but it didn’t mean that rescuer volunteers and the staff at Animal Hospital of Regency Park weren’t doing their best to help Christine.

And now in two weeks, she has been making steady strides. She has slowly been gaining weight, and her fight to survive continues to touch the hearts of animal lovers everywhere. The infection that previously threatened her life has been clearing up through daily bandage changes and soothing medicated baths…
