Largo highway stretch honors fallen soldier

LARGO — A stretch of Ulmerton Road was officially renamed Aug. 2 to honor a fallen soldier whose death more than a decade ago changed the course of America’s war in Afghanistan.

The newly dedicated portion of road in front of Indian Rocks Christian School now bears the name of Staff Sgt. Matthew Sitton, who was killed by an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan on Aug. 2, 2012, during his third deployment. He was 26.

Sitton, a graduate of Indian Rocks Christian School, joined the Army in March 2006. His military training included Airborne School, Long Range Reconnaissance Course, U.S. Army Ranger Course, U.S. Army Sniper School, Warrior’s Leader Course and Advanced Leaders Course…
