Beach Restoration Project Kicks Off In Pinellas County

County Forges Ahead With Sand Key, Treasure Island, and Upham Beach Nourishment Despite Missing Easements

PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. – Pinellas County is moving forward with an emergency beach nourishment project to restore eroded coastlines along Sand Key, Treasure Island, and Upham Beach. The $125.7 million project, funded primarily by the county’s tourist development tax and a state grant, is beginning construction with initial work in Indian Shores.

The project will address critical erosion, but it faces challenges due to a lack of temporary construction easements from some property owners. Over 100 easements are still missing, including more than 40 in Indian Shores.

This means that while sand will be placed on public land, some private properties will have gaps in their restoration. The county will not be able to fill in these sections once construction has passed, so affected property owners are urged to sign their easements immediately…
