MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. (WFLA) — There are now close to 3,000 American flags waving in the wind in Madeira Beach.
Each represents a life lost in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.
Madeira Beach firefighters, along with the Steven Coakley Foundation, family, friends and city staff members, spent Tuesday morning placing the flags at the city’s 9/11 Memorial.

“The rain kindly held off, giving way to a soft overcast sky that made the colors of our nation’s flag stand out even more — a solemn and beautiful tribute to those we lost,” the Madeira Beach Fire Department said.
Firefighters said they were joined by Kara Walker, who is a “dear friend” of the department and whose brother, Steven Coakley, was a New York firefighter. Coakley died while responding to the Sept. 11 attacks…
