Young mom overcomes tracheal cancer — now, she’s taking on Miles for Moffitt

Next week, thousands of people will pack the streets of Tampa for Miles for Moffitt. It’s Moffitt Cancer Center’s largest fundraiser of the year, and as the event marks its 20th anniversary, one first-time participant may just steal the spotlight.

Amy Maxson, 30, says she felt like she was in the best shape of her life, taking spin classes, doing yoga and chasing her goal of running an eight-minute mile before everything changed. Suddenly, she couldn’t catch her breath. Doctors initially diagnosed her with asthma, but after inhalers, medications and even a portable nebulizer failed to help, a CT scan finally revealed the real cause: a tumor in her lower trachea, blocking about 89% of her airway.
