Community demands transparency after popular Tampa DJ killed in road rage shooting

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Tampa police are investigating a deadly shooting in Ybor City over the weekend that left a well-known local DJ dead. The victim has been identified as Dedrick Sykes, also known as DJ Shy Guy.

Family members and friends are calling for transparency from the Tampa Police Department as the investigation moves forward. They say Sykes was loved across Tampa and they are struggling to understand how a disagreement on the road turned into a deadly shooting.

“Everybody loves him. His nickname is Shy Guy for a reason. So it’s not adding up,” said his friend Ashley Gooden.

Friends of Sykes said they are still trying to understand what led up to the shooting. One friend asked, “What could he have said or done to make someone shoot him and take his life? It doesn’t match the person that we know him to be.”

Tampa police said the incident started as a roadway dispute. Officers said there was an argument between Sykes and another man right before the shooting. Police said the man who fired the shots claimed self-defense, stayed at the scene and is cooperating with investigators…
