Large hole opens at intersection near Clearwater shopping center

CLEARWATER, Fla. (WFLA) — A large hole opened in the road outside of a popular Clearwater shopping center, Clearwater police said, causing some slowdowns for Saturday afternoon shoppers.

The hole formed at the intersection of Seville Boulevard and the northbound access road for U.S. Highway 19, which is at the corner of Clearwater Mall near the Costco.

Officials have not yet said what exactly caused it, but photos shared by the Clearwater Police Department placed the roughly 3-foot hole just beside the curb and a few feet before the crosswalk. Police posted about the incident on Facebook at around 4 p.m.

The two westbound lanes at that intersection were closed as officials worked on the scene, and drivers were asked to find alternate exits from the Clearwater Mall to help avoid backups.
