New Port Richey man faces up to 10 years in prison for social media threats against federal officials

NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. — A man from New Port Richey is now facing federal prison time after pleading guilty to sending threats to kill government officials, including a U.S. Cabinet member, through posts on social media.

Department of Justice U.S. Attorney Greg Kehoe, from the Middle District of Florida, announced Tuesday that Benjamin Rubin, 79, could go to prison for the maximum penalty of 10 years following the plea.

Kehoe’s announcement states that, according to court records, during the month of February of this year, Rubin began posting about his frustrations on social media. As days went by, his posts increased in violence, to the point of threatening to injure or kill officials and political figures…
