Pinellas County victim loses $127K in ‘pop-up scam,’ sheriff’s office says

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office is warning the community of an online scheme after a victim lost over $127,000.

PCSO said a fraudulent virus pop-up appears, instructing a potential victim to call a phone number.

“The scammer then tells the victim that they will assist with opening a new bank account and often threatens possible criminal charges if the victim does not comply,” PCSO said.

The victim is then told to wire money or withdraw large amounts of cash. The perpetrators will schedule future transactions from them in an attempt to steal from their bank account…
