Review finds 911 response was delayed in Jet Ski accident that led to man’s death

MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. — A dispatcher has been disciplined, and more training is underway after an internal review at one of the Tampa Bay area’s busiest 911 centers shows a call was not handled correctly in a Jet Ski accident that led to a man’s death.

Monique Van Stechelman was the first to call 911 on July 2 after a man had fallen off his Jet Ski near John’s Pass. She reported a troubling scene in the water.

“There is a Jet Ski that is completely floating with no one on it,” Van Stechelman said in the 911 call. “I thought one person was in the water, but I can’t see that person anymore, but that one Jet Ski is going to ride up. And the one lady is waving, and I, it’s just something’s not right about this situation.”…
