Investigators dismantle Florida synthetic drug ring; potent synthetic opioids seized

TAMPA, Fla. (CBS12) — An undercover investigation into a synthetic drug operation has led to arrests and the seizure of a substance authorities say is 13 times more potent than morphine.

The investigation began with an anonymous tip on Jan. 28, 2026, and led Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office deputies to go undercover, where they purchased products containing 7-hydroxymitragynine and substances that later tested positive for synthetic cannabinoids, authorities said.

According to deputies, 7-hydroxymitragynine is a powerful opioid-like compound derived from kratom. Florida classified it as a controlled substance in August 2025, making it illegal to possess or distribute.
