Pinellas County tests weapons detection systems at 2 high schools

LARGO, Fla. — New security measures are coming to two Pinellas County high schools. The district is launching a weapons detection system pilot program Tuesday morning at Gibbs High School and Palm Harbor University High School.

It’s the kind of technology you see at stadiums or some big box stores, and starting this week, you’ll see it at the two schools.

“It is a scan, it’s not intrusive whatsoever. If something does alert to it, if it’s a bag, we’re just going to do a bag check like we normally do, and we’re allowed to do bag checks on our campuses, nothing out of the ordinary,” said Sean Jowell, the director of School Safety and Security…
