Death of Eckerd student Lani Hicks leaves campus community grieving

Eckerd College freshman Lani Hicks died on April 4 in a car accident while home in Ardmore, Oklahoma. Riding in the car with friends on Interstate 35, Hicks was sitting on the edge of the passenger window when she fell onto the highway, according to the New York Post. Hicks was hit by multiple cars and pronounced dead on the scene by local officials.

Organized by a group of Lani’s friends, a celebration of her life was held on South Beach on April 7 for the Eckerd community to honor her life. Friends and acquaintances brought tea candles, started a bonfire and offered a card for attendees to sign for her family. Hicks’ friends shared stories of her and their time spent together. The group of about 30 people circled around the bonfire, staring into the flames and holding their silence as the wind whipped around them.
