Pinellas first responders raise awareness on water safety, preventing child drownings

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WFLA) — May is National Water Safety Month and first responders in Pinellas County are trying to raise awareness to prevent pediatric drownings.

Officials said the state of Florida leads the country in drowning fatalities for children under 5 years of age.

St. Petersburg Fire Chief Keith Watts said in 2025, the county had 25 pediatric submersions, three of which were fatalities. He said children drowning is completely preventable.
