Louisiana man attacked by alligator while attempting to run from police

JEFFERSON PARISH, La. (WGNO) — A man is facing charges after allegedly fleeing a traffic stop, jumping from an interstate overpass into a swamp, and being attacked by an alligator, according to Louisiana State Police.

Troopers said they first responded Monday to reports of a Toyota Supra driving recklessly on Interstate 10 in Jefferson Parish. The vehicle had reportedly struck a concrete barrier and suffered a tire blowout before continuing onto Interstate 310 in St. Charles Parish.

Police conducted a traffic stop, identifying the driver as 40-year-old Victor Rivas of Montz. Troopers said Rivas showed signs of impairment and then ran from the scene, jumping from the elevated interstate into a nearby swamp.

Authorities later located Rivas walking along Highway 61. When officers approached again, he allegedly ran into a swampy area, where he was attacked by an alligator and suffered injuries to both arms.
