Malley’s Lakewood store remodel draws criticism over lost character, nonlocal ice cream

In November. your pages celebrated Malley’s renovated Lakewood store and its new mural, unveiled for the company’s 90th anniversary (“Malley’s flagship gets a facelift,” Nov. 23, 2025). I went to see the triumph, and found a loss.

The Alice in Wonderland mural that gave the parlor its small enchantment is gone, replaced with a vomit or highlighter green and pink. The sundaes are built now on Perry’s Ice Cream, shipped from New York, in place of Cleveland’s own Pierre’s. The fudge display has vanished. The bins of saltwater taffy are gone. What remains has been repriced to a height no confectioner in this city has any business asking.

Since Malley’s was gobbled up by private equity and installed its first nonfamily president, the word has been growth. The reality is subtraction. A 90-year-old institution is being hollowed out and its husk sold back to the city at a premium, its character traded for a margin…
