Man says he stole elderly woman’s cash to prevent Walmart staff from doing the same

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio — A woman, 87, said Sept. 2 that she accidentally left her wallet in her cart when she left Walmart earlier and found that it had been turned in, but was missing $247 in cash.

Surveillance video was reviewed and showed that less than a minute after the woman left her cart, a man took the wallet and went through it as he entered the store. He could be seen placing something into his pocket before turning in the wallet at customer service.

The suspect was identified as a Cleveland Heights resident based on his vehicle registration and officers cited the man, 76, at his home for theft. He claimed not to have stolen any money but five days later, he turned in the cash and said that he took it because he feared that a Walmart employee would steal it after he turned in the wallet. He answered no further questions…
