Cleveland City Council and Cleveland Metropolitan School District could swap several parcels of land to clear the way for a new high school in Glenville.
City Council’s Municipal Services and Property Committee passed an ordinance Monday that would give CMSD the J. Glen Smith Health Center in Glenville and several other properties. The school district in return would hand over Walton School in the Clark-Fulton neighborhood and Newton D. Baker School on the far West Side to the city. CMSD closed Newton D. Baker in spring 2025 after it said it lacked the funds to repair or replace the building, while Walton School was closed and merged into the new Clark School in fall 2025.
The land swap must still be considered by other city council committees and ultimately put up to a vote before all of council. CMSD’s Board of Education will need to approve the land swap as well. The district has previously said it plans to combine Collinwood and Glenville high schools into a new high school building in Glenville by 2031.
