Jewish values guide Beachwood coaches

There are several core Jewish values that center around making one’s community a better place and lending a helping hand to those who need it. Tikkun olam, repairing the world, is about improving society; tzedakah, charity, is about giving aid and resources to others; and chesed, kindness, is about showing care for fellow humans.

At Beachwood High School, there are six Jewish coaches in the athletic departments who grew up learning about Judaic lessons. Many of them still use those principles as a guiding light for why they choose to mentor the youth through the prep sports world, they told the Cleveland Jewish News.

They are: David Cole, boys’ tennis coach; Brian Greene, boys’ soccer head coach; Caren Kirchick, girls’ tennis head coach; Jamie Lader – cross-country head coach; Josh Lowe, assistant boys’ soccer coach; and Andy Wolfe, assistant boys’ golf coach

David Cole

David Cole has headed the boys’ tennis program since 2012. In his second year with the program, the Bison finished the regular season with a 19-1 dual-match record, believed at the time to be the best in school history, and won the Chagrin Valley Conference Tournament. The team made an appearance in the Ohio Tennis Coaches’ Association state tournament for the first time after winning the OTCA Division II Northeast District final.

Under Cole, the Bison sent a doubles team to the state tourney in 2014 and sent a pair of doubles in 2015. In 2023, Landis Teren qualified for the state singles tournament…
