Cleveland’s Atlantic Beer Garden dates back to 1865, making it the oldest surviving beer garden in the city and state of Ohio. The original Atlantic Beer Garden opened at a time when Cleveland’s immigrant population was expanding, with German and Bohemian immigrants establishing small breweries for Cleveland’s growing local market. The garden operated until about 1915, when it was replaced by a warehouse. In the 21st century, it was revived by Forest City Brewery, retaining the garden’s original name and also occupying the former warehouse building.
Located in Cleveland’s small, yet storied, Duck Island neighborhood, the garden’s history helps distinguish it from a typical brewery patio. In 2017, Cleveland Magazine reported, “The 150-year-old Atlantic Tavern & Beer Garden has been resurrected as Forest City’s backyard green space.” In the same article, the brewery’s owners share that they see their business as a modern continuation of the original role of the space in the community as a place for people to gather and socialize…
