Man convicted in knife attack on local police officer

CLEVELAND (WJW) — A Mayfield Heights man has been convicted of attacking an Orange Village police sergeant with a knife during a police response nearly two years ago.

A Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court judge on Tuesday found Cameron Howard, 28, guilty on all counts in the March 2022 attack on Sgt. Mike Debeljak, according to information from county prosecutors.

Debeljak was one of the officers called to an Orange Place hotel to remove Howard from the premises, at the request of hotel management. When officers told Howard he was being made to leave, he lashed out at Debeljak with a knife, FOX 8 News previously reported .

“Sgt. Debeljak received multiple lacerations and a skull fracture. He has staples in his neck and his head and received numerous stitches in his hand,” Orange Village Police Chief Chris Kostura told FOX 8 News at the time.

Supporters raised more than $44,000 for his recovery via GoFundMe.
