No more lead aprons for dental X-rays; new guidelines nix protection even for pregnant women

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The next time you visit the dentist, you may not have to put on that heavy, uncomfortable lead apron before having X-rays taken. The use of lead abdominal aprons, or thyroid collars, on patients during dental X-rays is no longer recommended, according to the American Dental Association Council on Scientific Affairs. The new recommendations were published Friday in the Journal of the American Dental Association.
