Jayrion Church , now 18, had previously pleaded not guilty to charges stemming from the March 2023 shooting of detective Mark Bahrijczuk .

Church reversed his plea to the following charges, according to documents:

  • Attempted aggravated murder
  • Failure to comply with the order/signal of a police officer
  • Improperly handling of firearms in a motor vehicle
  • Receiving stolen property
  • Having weapons under disability.

The shooting, which took place on the city’s east side while police were carrying out a stolen vehicle operation, happened after officers spotted a vehicle without license plates. Four people reportedly got out of the car and began to run. The detective was then shot getting out of his vehicle.
