Your endorsement of Michael C. O’Malley ignored the evidence

“Adult criminal prosecution also leads to higher recidivism rates, which raises the risk a child will bring further harm to their community,” wrote then-NAACP President Danielle Sydnor in her 2019 op-ed in The Plain Dealer decrying the broken promises of Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael O’Malley. This idea — that trying juveniles as adults exacerbates juvenile crime rates — is neither new nor fringe: Sydnor’s link is to a 2007 report by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Despite this, the editorial board, in endorsing O’Malley in the Democratic primary, derides County Prosecutor candidate Matthew Ahn for “bizarrely” blaming O’Malley’s approach to juvenile justice as one contributor to Cleveland’s juvenile crime wave.
