Cleveland safety director under investigation after comments made to I-Team

CLEVELAND (WJW) — The Fox 8 I-Team has learned the Cleveland Safety Director is now under internal investigation following comments he made to the I-Team about a top assistant crashing a city car with kids inside.

The Mayor’s Office said Director of Public Safety Karrie Howard will remain on the job during the investigation.

On Wednesday , the I-Team revealed that Assistant Safety Director Jakimah Dye had crashed a City of Cleveland car with kids inside the vehicle on Saturday. For that, the city placed Dye under internal investigation.

Now, her boss finds himself under investigation for what he said to the I-Team . Howard said he didn’t know the city had a policy against an employee traveling with kids in city cars. He told us he’s had his own son in his city car as well.

Director of Communications Sarah Johnson said officials are taking the matter “seriously.”

When I-Team Reporter Peggy Gallek asked the Safety Director why Dye had kids in the city vehicle, he responded that he didn’t realize that was an issue.
