Just in: Cleveland Catholic Diocese ‘security incident’

CLEVELAND (WJW) — The Cleveland Catholic Diocese stated it conducted a “forensic” investigation into a “security incident.”

According to the Diocese, “an unauthorized party may have obtained access to an employee email account.” The Diocese said the data breach involves employees personal, financial and even travel information including the following:

  • Financial account information
  • Routing number
  • Security code
  • Health insurance information
  • Passport number
  • Social Security number
  • Full names
  • Date of birth

“Upon learning this…we commenced a prompt and thorough investigation,” the Diocese stated. “As part of the investigation, we engaged third-party cybersecurity professionals to conduct a forensic investigation and review the impacted email account and the data stored within.”

“Impacted individuals are encouraged to take steps to protect themselves against identity fraud, including placing a fraud alert/security freeze on their credit files, obtaining free credit reports, remaining vigilant in reviewing financial account statements and credit reports for fraudulent or irregular activity on a regular basis.”
