Vaping and smoking ban on public property approved in Rocky River

ROCKY RIVER, Ohio (WJW) – The Rocky River City Council approved a ban on smoking and vaping tobacco and marijuana products on city-owned public property on Monday.

The ban now makes smoking and vaping off limits inside and outside those properties, and includes the lawns and sidewalks adjacent to them.

It also includes public parks, pavilions, public parking spaces, and sports parks.

“We’re always looking out on the horizon to make sure we make our citizens happy and we accommodate what their concerns are,” Rocky River Law Director Michael O’Shea said. “You can’t smoke inside of any public facilities, so we thought we’d extend the prohibition to places like our parks and areas where people congregate outside and to kind of broaden the band a little bit so that folks that don’t smoke can enjoy our parks.”

To be clear, this doesn’t ban smoking and vaping on all city sidewalks. It’s just the sidewalks adjacent to public property. It also doesn’t include the roads, O’Shea noted. No one would get in trouble for smoking or vaping in their car while driving.
