Columbus man wanted in connection with deadly shooting surrenders in Cuyahoga County

A Columbus man wanted in connection with a fatal shooting Wednesday on the Northeast Side that left one man dead is now in custody in Cuyahoga County, Columbus police announced Thursday.

Kevin Hurt, 53, faces a murder charge, accused of shooting and killing 27-year-old Jshawn Simmons Wednesday afternoon outside of a hotel on the 6200 block of Quarter Horse Drive on the Northeast Side.

Hurt turned himself in Thursday at the Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Office in Cleveland, police said. His car was also located in Cleveland and impounded.

Police responded just after 2 p.m. Wednesday to a reported of a shooting on Quarter Horse Drive, where officers found Simmons suffering from a gunshot wound. Columbus Fire medics pronounced Simmons dead at 2:11 p.m.

According to a probable cause affidavit filed by Columbus police homicide detectives, witnesses identified Hurt as the shooter and said Hurt admitted to killing Simmons. Detectives at the Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Office also noted that Simmons admitted to detectives that he killed someone in Columbus, the affidavit says.
