County prosecutor should investigate allegations about Cleveland Heights mayor: Editorial

Cleveland Heights has been reeling for months over turmoil stemming from dysfunction in the mayor’s office — turmoil that has prompted resignations, claims of hostile work environments, and a civil rights complaint.

But the alarming revelations by reporter Cory Shaffer about Mayor Kahlil Seren’s inexplicable entry into the Law Department after hours — and the discovery of his laptop in that department during a hostile workplace investigation — demand an investigation overseen by Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael O’Malley.

Much of the drama involves the conduct of Seren’s wife, Natalie McDaniel, including alleged antisemitic remarks about Jewish city officials and residents. In a civil rights complaint, former city staffer Patrick Costigan alleges that McDaniel referred to one Jewish official as a “brood mare destined for the glue factory” and called a city resident “that Jewish b—-” in both text messages and private conversations…
