5 hospitalized, crews battle flames after reported explosion at Cleveland apartment

CLEVELAND (WJW) — Cleveland firefighters battled a massive fire at an apartment complex on the city’s east side on Monday afternoon.

First responders were called to the complex in the 7000 block of Garden Valley Avenue around 4:15 p.m.

“We responded to the report of an explosion and it appears that we did have an explosion in one of the apartments in this building,” Cleveland Fire Lt. Mike Norman told reporters. “There’s a massive hole in the side of the building, you can see all the way through it.”

Five people were taken to MetroHealth, a hospital spokesperson said. The fire chief said he doesn’t have a status update on them at this time, but he believes the victims are in serious condition…
