A year after 2024’s deadliest day, survivors await justice while scars linger for families

CLEVELAND, Ohio – After celebrating a friend’s birthday, Demetrius Walker, Trayvi’yon Smith and some friends decided to end the day of July 7, 2024, by stopping at a house on East 93rd, where someone was running an impromptu restaurant from the garage.

They waited for their orders of fried fish and a po’ boy and mingled, never seeing the car that drove by. In a span of seconds, the passengers opened fire with an AR-15 and at least two handguns, spraying at least 26 bullets at the garage, records show.

Walker and Smith dropped, each struck by multiple gunshots. A woman was wounded in the leg. Another was scalded by hot grease from a deep fryer that exploded…
