NE Ohio Boys & Girls Clubs face program cuts amid $6B federal funding freeze

CLEVELAND (WJW) – A dark cloud of uncertainty looms over the future of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America as a federal funding freeze threatens to impact more than 1.4 million children nationwide.

“I’m in year 33 of Boys & Girls Club work, and I’ve never seen something like this,” said Allen Smith Jr., CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeast Ohio.

Smith said he’s deeply concerned as the organization faces the effects of a $6 billion freeze in federal education funding grants, which could begin impacting summer and after-school programs as early as this fall.

“These cuts are not tied to program efficiencies or evaluations,” Smith said. “Boys & Girls Clubs are doing a phenomenal job in terms of the work that we do.”…
