EAST CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) – Mayor Lateek R. Shabazz has formally requested that the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency launch an immediate investigation into the former Noble Road construction and demolition debris dump site following renewed health concerns among residents and city staff.
Mayor Shabazz wants the air and soil tested for environmental contaminants.
The Mayor, joined by Chief of Staff, Eric J. Brewer, and Executive Assistant, Justyn Anderson, visited the site over the weekend to speak with residents who live adjacent to the property. Several residents reported cancer diagnoses, including one non-smoking resident who underwent a lung removal surgery. One resident had died. Both Mayor Shabazz and his aides experienced acute symptoms, including persistent coughing and facial irritation, after visiting the area.
“What’s behind their backyards now is tree waste spewing spores and bacteria next to a school and within breathing distance of thousands of children and seniors. The symptoms we experienced firsthand are consistent with past reports of environmental contamination,” said Mayor Shabazz…
