Doctors doubt accused Cleveland cop killer can be restored to competency

CLEVELAND, Ohio – De’Lawnte Hardy’s doctors fear they cannot restore his mental competency to stand trial within the time frame allotted by state law, a judge said Tuesday.

Hardy, 26, is charged with killing Cleveland police officer Jamieson Ritter as the officer attempted to serve a warrant on July 4, 2024. Days earlier, prosecutors say, Hardy shot and killed his grandmother. He has pleaded not guilty to aggravated murder and other charges.

Last September, Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge Ashley Kilbane found Hardy was unable to assist in his own defense. She ordered him to receive inpatient psychiatric treatment at Twin Valley Behavioral Healthcare, a state hospital in Columbus…
