Woman accused of killing child in Giant Eagle parking lot appeared in court

CLEVELAND (WJW) — The woman accused of killing an innocent child in a North Olmsted grocery store parking lot last year appeared in court Wednesday.

The attorneys for Bionca Ellis, Fernando Mack and Carlos Johnson, filed a motion in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court last week, asking the court to accept her plea of Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity.

This was the final pretrial before her trial scheduled for October. Wednesday, the judge went over the logistics of the trial to come, explaining plans for jury selection and more.

In February, Ellis was found competent for trial.

In June 2024, police said 3-year-old Julian Wood died when Ellis stabbed him as he was with his mother in an unprovoked attack. It happened in the parking lot of a Giant Eagle store. And, investigators found Ellis did not know the boy or his mother.
