NORTH OLMSTED, Ohio – The intended victim of an online scam told North Olmsted police that one of the fraudsters threatened to report him to the IRS, FBI, and police unless he returned $10,000 that was supposedly deposited mistakenly into his bank account.
An officer at 1:15 p.m. on Aug. 25 responded to the Century Federal Credit Union on Lorain Road for a fraud report. The intended victim was in the office of a credit union employee to whom he had gone for assistance.
The man said he had received an email supposedly from Apple stating that he had charges to his account for $485 and that he should call a phone number provided in the email if the charge was in error. The man, knowing he hadn’t ordered anything from Apple, called the bogus number and spoke with someone who claimed they would assist him by transferring money into his checking account…
