CLEVELAND (WJW) — A Shaker Heights cheerleader has returned to school — and the field —after an emergency leg amputation over the summer.
As FOX 8 has previously shared, 17-year-old Amani Smith-McDaniel’s medical crisis started as a routine day at cheerleading camp in June, where Amani complained of stomach pain. Doctors discovered a ruptured abdominal cyst. An infection led to sepsis, a potentially fatal condition.

Then, the unthinkable.
Amani’s parents said that an artery was nicked during a surgery, and her leg would be amputated at the waist.
Now, more than three months later, Amani and her parents sat down with FOX 8’s Stefani Shaffer to share an update as she begins her senior year at Shaker Heights High School and continues to follow her passion to dance and perform on the field.
