Fired jail lieutenant allowed to resign in $45K settlement with Cuyahoga County

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Former corrections lieutenant George Hughes, who was fired earlier this year when he was accused of sexual misconduct, will receive $45,000 and have his record changed to show he resigned as part of a settlement agreement with Cuyahoga County.

The agreement allows both sides to deny wrongdoing, describing the payment as a “compromise” to avoid the cost and uncertainty of further proceedings, and requires the county to provide only a neutral reference if future employers seek verification of Hughes’ work history.

“The county expressly denies all liability or unlawful conduct,” the settlement reads. “Likewise, Mr. Hughes denies all allegations of alleged rule violations.”…
